“It has given me opportunities I wouldn’t have dreamed of”
Steph Calley had always wanted to be a Police Officer, so despite doing well in her GCSEs, she wasn’t encouraged to go to university.
After one year of sixth form, three years working in McDonalds and then two years as a special in the Police Service, Steph realised that her ‘dream job’ wasn’t the dream she’d hoped for. It left her reconsidering her future.
Thanks to an Access to Higher Education course, and a scholarship, Steph is now studying for a Psychology degree at the University of Bath. And she hasn’t looked back since.
“It’s nice for someone to take a chance on you.
“Being sponsored through a scholarship is them saying: ‘We think something of you and we think you can be someone.'”
Steph has now completed a summer internship with Lloyd’s Banking group and is hoping to start a career in HR after she graduates.
