The Ko PhD Scholarships

Thanks to a generous donation from alumnus Mickey Ko, talented researchers from China will now be able to apply for a scholarship to undertake a PhD in either the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering & Design.

Mickey Ko graduated from Bath in 1976 with a BSc Economics and has had a successful career in his native Hong Kong. For many years he has been an active member of our Hong Kong alumni chapter, and earlier this year gave a substantial gift to create the Ko Scholarship Fund, which will provide financial support to academically able applicants who would otherwise not have the means to fund their studies.

A tradition of philanthropy

The Ko family has a strong tradition of philanthropy. Mickey has for many years supported the poorest young people in rural China, enabling them to complete their studies. In addition, Mickey and his family have created graduate scholarships at the University of Oxford in memory of Mickey’s grandfather, Mr Ko Cheuk-hung, MBE (1902-1987), who was a prominent philanthropist in British Hong Kong following World War II, supporting the homeless and campaigning for the protection of women and children from exploitation in southern China.

Professor Jonathan Knight, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research said:

“For too many talented students around the world, an education remains beyond their reach.

The Ko Scholarships will not only support the brightest students from China to realise their potential here at Bath, but will also facilitate further opportunities for collaboration with our international research partners.

We are very grateful to Mickey Ko for this most generous gift.”

The Ko Scholarships

In keeping with the philanthropic traditions of the Ko family, priority for the scholarships will be given to students who demonstrate financial disadvantage and a preference will also be given to those who are permanent residents in Anhui province. In order to maximise the impact of the scholarships, the University has committed to providing match funding and will collaborate with other funding agencies.

Further details of how to apply for the Ko Scholarships will be announced in the autumn.
